Scholarships Open Doors For Students Pursuing Careers in Aging Services
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County awarded a full-tuition scholarship to a freshman and a $5,000 AARP Career Award to a junior this month, recognizing both for their dedication and promise as majors in the first undergraduate class in Management of Aging Studies, a new bachelor of arts degree offered through the Erickson School.

Core Text "Aging, Society and the Life Course" Published in Third Edition, Catonsville, MD
Just published in its third edition, Dr. Leslie Morgan’s textbook on social gerontology, “Aging, Society and the Life Course,” has become a central text in aging studies. Morgan, associate dean of the Erickson School, co-authored the book with Dr. Suzanne R. Kunkel, director of Scripps Gerontology Center of Miami University.

How we age is becoming a growing curriculum
More than 100 students - including 43 declared majors - enrolled in two courses on the experience of aging and on global aging and social insurance. Some were UMBC freshmen or previously undeclared

Developer Of The “Eden Alternative” And “Green House” Approach To Long-Term Care To Deliver 7 P.M. Lecture

Thomas has been recognized as an innovator in formulating approaches to long-term care. Thomas has brought plants, dogs, cats and birds into nursing home facilities to share with patients. This unique approach, known as the Eden Alternative, shifted attention toward enhancing the emotional well-being of residents.

Edgewater student thinks multigenerational, earns scholarship
The 20-year-old from Edgewater was recently named the first recipient of The Erickson School Achievement Scholarship at UMBC. The scholarship provides full tuition and fees per academic year for a qualified student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree at UMBC in Management of Aging Services.

Two Executive Education courses offered at The Erickson School:
October 24-27, November 1-4
The Erickson School of Aging Studies at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) teams once again with the National Investment Center for the Seniors Housing & Care Industry (NIC) to offer a set of Executive Education courses. The series continues at UMBC with two sessions, “Finance, Underwriting and Investment Analysis” on Oct. 24-27 and “Development” on Nov. 1-4.
"‘Finance, Underwriting and Investment Analysis’ and ‘Development’ combine several of the most important ingredients of successful seniors housing and care,” said Kevin Heffner, CAE, CFRE, who recently joined the Erickson School of Aging Studies as its new Director of Executive Education.

Task force examines the movement of Maryland's elderly into and out of the state
Its called the dynamincs of elderly migration, and its a relatively new field
that not only looks at how many buy why. "It became an issue a few years ago when people retired and moved to warmer climates, to places like Florida, Arizona and New Mexico," said J. Kevin Eckert, dean of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Erickson School of Aging Studies. "States began looking at the impact of losing their retirees, especially as the baby boomers, who control a significant amount of resources in the United States, got older. It has real implications for states' budgets."

Baltimore County-Based National Aging Studies Undergraduate Program to Start This Fall
Classes Filling Up!
“Our first students will arrive at the end of August, with the first class beginning on September 6,” says Lonny Blessing, director of program administration at The Erickson School. “Already, 73 students have enrolled in Aging 200, our introductory class on the aging process.”
Other undergraduate course offerings include courses on management, policy, and the study of human aging. It is the only major of its kind in the country.

Heffner named Director of Executive Education at Erickson School of Aging Studies
BALTIMORE – Kevin D. Heffner, CAE, CFRE, an executive with the Beacon Institute, has been selected as the new Director of Executive Education for the Erickson School of Aging Studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).
Heffner brings to the Erickson School of Aging Studies considerable experience and expertise in senior care. He will coordinate a program of executive education courses offered by the Erickson School for leaders in the seniors housing and care industry.
The Executive Development Program at the Erickson School is presented in partnership with the National Investment Center for the Seniors Housing & Care Industry (NIC), a nonprofit organization that has been the leading source of business and financial information for the senior living industry since 1991.
