UMBC offers a master's degree program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. The TESOL MA program is offered through the Department of Education with cooperation from the Department of Modern Language and Linguistics.
The concentration is designed to train both prospective and experienced teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL). It provides students with a strong theoretical and practical foundation in applied linguistics, language acquisition, ESL/EFL methods, testing, cross-cultural studies and curriculum development. The program prepares students for the analysis, design and development of ESOL instructional programs and their systematic operation, evaluation and maintenance. Students in the MA program can choose to add K-12 ESOL certification to the ESOL concentration.

The Masters International (MI) program for ESOL is also administered through UMBC's TESOL MA program. This program enables students to combine Peace Corps experience with a master's education.
The ESOL Program also offers a 4 course Post Baccalaureate Certificate in ESOL featuring face-to-face and online courses.

Deadlines for Completion of Application:
For
Fall Semester:
February 28th for international applicants and April 15 for domestic applicants.
For Spring Semester: October 31st for both international and domestic applicants.

Interested applicants who miss the deadlines may take up to 2 courses in the program as non-degree students with permission from the program directors. Taking these courses does not insure entrance into the program, but if accepted, they can be applied to the MA degree.
