Silvio Avendano, a graduate of the MA Program in ESOL/Bilingual Education and a current LLC doctoral candidate, has
published a book review in the new TESOL publication, Essential Teacher.
Many of you may want to look at the recent article by ESOL MA Program
graduate, Theresa Bartel, in the November/December 2003 issue of ESL Magazine. The article, entitled "Empowering Language Minority Students," describes her work in helping language minority students to establish their "Friends without Borders" program to encourage greater integration of language minority students (including ESL students) in all activities in the school. The students also become cultural ambassadors, translators, role models, and participants in a variety of student activities, including giving announcements over the PA system in their own languages.
George Bunch, a graduate of our MA ESOL/Bilingual Program, who is finishing up his PhD at Stanford, just accepted a tenure-track assistant professor
position at the University of California, Santa Cruz beginning this fall. It's a wonderful position for him, since the Department of Education there is focused on
meeting the needs of linguistically and culturally diverse students. The department also has a new Ph.D program which he will be teaching in, that focuses on language and literacy (similar to our LLC program). Congratulations, George. I know he would be interested in hearing from any of you, who are interested in learning about their PhD degree. His email address is "George Bunch" - gbunch@stanford.edu
