Objectives
A. Diffusion of training at UMBC in the 18-month life cycle of the
FaCT grant
- Help approximately 200 UMBC faculty enhance their courses using the
FaCT common tool set.
- Help all faculty in one complete degree program extensively use the
tools in their teaching.
B. Serve as a UMBC case study to explore faculty rewards for using
technology in teaching.
- Explore the implementation of a contract for faculty to develop
courseware whereby the university holds copyright but the faculty member
earns royalties.
C. Help make training of UMBC faculty in use of technology permanent
institutional commitment.
- Create a permanent position of instructional designer and trainer in
the Office of Instructional Technology (OIT) or Faculty Development Center
to continue the work started in FaCT.
- Maintain a website with FaCT-related courses and training needs
assessments.
- Establish online support from University Computing Services (UCS),
Library, and OIT that is continually available to faculty for help with
effectively using the tools.
D. Develop a training system and infrastructure that facilitates the
coordination information technology and the educational enterprise.
- Advise on the educational use of Microsoft tools so that information
generated in one tool is readily available in another. Where necessary
create new simple applications that fill voids not met by existing
software.
- Prepare training for the link between myUMBC and end-user educational
applications. For example, downloading class lists from myUMBC would be explored.
- Help develop information plans for the university that are guided by
feedback from faculty who are learning how to be effective with
information tools in education.
E. Sharing of results to the rest of the USM.
- Provide courseware, methodologies, and analysis of results to rest of
USM.
- Offer UMBC staff support under suitable agreement to other
institutions.
- Work with other institutions to help them address challenges UMBC
experienced with FaCT.
