The Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships Book Loan process allows for the purchase of your books at the UMBC Bookstore. Book Loans will be available starting two weeks before the start of classes; a schedule of Book Loan hours and availability is provided on our Calendar.
How to Determine If You Are Eligible
If you can answer yes to all of these statements, you are eligible for a Book Loan:
- I have submitted all requested financial aid documents and they have been processed by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships (this includes all loan applications) - I do not have any outstanding To-Do's in my Alerts on myUMBC
- The amount of all aid I will receive is more than the amount of my bill (I have reviewed my bill on my self-service page of myUMBC)
- I do not have a past due balance from a prior semester and I do not have an account that is currently in Collections
How Much Is My Book Loan
Book Loans are awarded based upon your enrollment status OR your refund amount, whichever is less. Use the following chart to determine the maximum amount you can receive in a Book Loan.
|Enrollment Status||Max Book Loan Amt|
|Full-Time (12+ credits)||$600|
|Three Quarter-Time (9-11 credits)||$450|
|Half-Time (6-8 credits)||$300|
|Less Than Half-Time (<6 credits)||$150|
How the Book Loan Process Works:
To request a Book Loan, visit the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships during the Book Loan hours listed on our Calendar. Staff will evaluate your eligibility for a Book Loan and advise you of the amount of approval. To determine when your Book Loan can be used in the UMBC Bookstore, please visit our Calendar and click on the "Book Loan Requests" title under the date your request was approved.
After selecting your books, advise the cashier at the Bookstore that you are using a Book Loan and the charges (up to the approved amount) will be billed to your student billing account. Be sure to monitor your myUMBC account to confirm that the book loan charges have posted. It is your responsibility to use your refund to pay charges incurred to your Student Account if you use a Book Loan.
You must have your red UMBC Campus ID card with you to request a Book Loan at the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships AND to use the Book Loan at the Bookstore.
