Position:    Work Study SUCCESS Peer
Positions Available:    2
Duties:    The Shriver Center is currently seeking 2 Work Study positios to support the Shriver Center's SUCCESS initiative that will launch this Fall 2012 semester. The UMBC SUCCESS initiative, formed in partnership with the Maryland Department of Disabilities, will serve young adults with intellectual disabilities in Maryland. Through participation in courses and campus-based activities here at UMBC, a co-hort of 6-8 SUCCESS students will be connected to employment and prepared for independent living upon completion of the program. The Shriver Center is recruiting a Work Study SUCCESS Peer to work alongside students in the SUCCESS initiative. The role is multi-faceted, and Work Study SUCCESS Peers will serve as mentors, advisors, and tutors to students with intellectual disabilities who are enrolled in the SUCCESS initiative. The SUCCESS Peers will lead activities from an established curriculum and will serve an integral role in this pilot year of the program. Position Description: The Work Study SUCCESS Peers may be expected to fulfill the following responsibilities: - Serve as a mentor, tutor, and support to students with intellectual disabilities that are enrolled in the SUCCESS initiative. - Attend lunch with SUCCESS students, providing valuable social skills support and social interaction. - Participate in guided activities for the SUCCESS students, based on the service-learning curriculum that has been created. - Attend the Pre-Service Training before the start of service. Work Study Hours Commitment The following days and times are when the SUCCESS activities will be taking place. Work Study SUCCESS Peers will commit to provide coverage and support during a mix of days and times. Hours for the position will be assigned based on applicant schedules and interests, but the applicant should be available during at least some of these days/times each week: Mondays: 11am-11:50am Thursdays: 12pm-1pm Mondays: 12pm-1pm Fridays: 11am-11:50pm Tuesdays: 12pm-1pm Fridays: 12pm-1pm Wednesdays: 11am- 11:50am Fridays: 1pm-4pm
     
Required skills:    Qualifications: The Work Study SUCCESS Peer is expected to: - Have a desire to work as a mentor and tutor to students enrolled in SUCCESS. - Be flexible and patient in providing one-one-one support to students with intellectual disabilities. - Demonstrate a strong desire to learn from new experiences and have fun building new relationships!
