Re: H1N1 Information
Dear Student,
Over the past few weeks, you have undoubtedly heard about the H1N1 flu and the effects it can potentially have on individuals and the UMBC community. Since last week, University Health Services reports a sharp spike in the number of presumptive H1N1 cases at UMBC While most students are sick for only a few days and are recovering, there are still members of our community who may be at high risk for complications. I am writing to you today to ask you to be socially responsible in taking care of yourself and taking necessary precautions to keep those around us healthy.
With more students reporting flu like illness, I wanted to remind you of the following information. If you get the flu, please:
1) do not go out (other than to seek medical assistance) when suffering from flu-like symptoms. This includes attending class, going to parties, sporting events, shopping, etc.
2) self-isolate at home until you are without fever for 24 hours, without the use of fever reducing medications.
3) wash your hands frequently and cover your cough and sneeze with a tissue or in your sleeve.
4) let your professors know you will not be in class due to the flu.
5) report yourself sick by going to https://my.umbc.edu/apps/h1n1, logging in to myUMBC and checking in on the flu report network. This will allow UMBC to keep count of the number of students, staff and faculty that are ill.
Again, I strongly urge you to stay at home getting well if you become ill. Do not attend class, do not attend social events, and if you need to be in contact with someone in order to get medical advice or assistance, please do so using appropriate measures (masks, phone, email). The university stands behind you through this time. The Provost has asked faculty not to penalize students for being absent from class and to make accommodations to ensure that you can make up work and cover material.
If you are still unaware of the steps necessary to prevent, prepare for or treat the flu, more information is available from the University Health Services Web site at www.umbc.edu/uhs/healthalerts or www.flu.gov.
If you have any concerns or questions do not hesitate to contact me by phone (410-455-2220) or by e-mail.
