Facilities Management supports plans for the campus's short-term and long-term space needs stemming from changes in enrollment, growth in programs, and campus development. FM planning staff develop detailed space projections, conduct space utilization studies, prepare feasibility studies, develop space planning scenarios, and conduct backfill analyses.
Successful space planning at UMBC results from not only the collection and organization of data, but from focused analysis and the thoughtful graphic representation of options. This allows campus leaders to make informed decisions regarding existing and proposed space.
In 2010, the 2009 UMBC Space Report was completed as a companion to the 2009 UMBC Facilities Master Plan Update. The campus’s fall 2009 space usage was documented and analyzed by room use type and department prior to the adoption of UMBC's Office Space Guidelines.
The planning staff supports the management of the campus’s limited space through enforcement of the UMBC Space Management Policy, application of established space guidelines, and managing UMBC’s Space Management Committee.
