Recent Research Activities: 1. Gunpowder Falls State Park: A Complete Hiking Guide

This project will map the trails found in all parts of the Gunpowder Falls State Park. Data will be collected using GPS and integrated into a GIS data base containing topography, roads, streams, etc. It will be the first complete map of hiking trails for the entire GFSP system.

2. State of Maryland Digital Atlas for Elementary Schools

A continuation of a project begun with an Advanced Cartographic Design class taught in Spring 2002, will be funded under a grant obtained through the Maryland Geographic Alliance. The project will result in the development of a 2 CD set; 1) a CD containing approximately 150 thematic maps of Maryland, and about 100 project maps for students, and 2) a CD containing photos from many locations around the state of Maryland to be used in conjunction with the thematic maps.

3. The Complete C & O Canal Map and Canal Lingo

A collaborative effort with Professor Paul Daniel McDermott (Montgomery College, retired), this will be a large scale, 4-plate map of the C & O Canal showing topography, roads, historical points of interest, etc. It will also contain a glossary of over 340 terms associated with the C & O Canal. Many photos will be worked into the map to pictorially illustrate key placed on and near the canal.

4. A Series of Horse Trail Maps in Montgomery County

This project has been underwritten by the Maryland TROT Association. The maps will be used by trail riders in Montgomery County. The first two areas to be mapped are the Travillah area and the Patuxent River State Park area north of Brighton Dam reservoir.
