Environmental Studies B.A. Requirements

The B.A. program in Environmental Studies requires a minimum of 52 credits.

All students are required to complete the following two foundation courses:
GEOG 120 - Environmental Science and Conservation [3]
GEOG 220 - Laboratory and Field Techniques for Environmental Science [3]

All students are required to complete the following background courses:
Social Sciences and Humanities [6]

Two courses from the following:

ECON 101 - Principles of Microeconomics [3]
POLI 100 - American Governments & Politics [3]
ANTH 211 - Cultural Anthropology [3]
PHIL 150 - Contemporary Moral Issues [3]
HCST 100 - The Human Context of Science and Technology [3]


Math and Natural Sciences [21-23]
GES 110 - Physical Geography[3]
MATH 150 - Precalculus [4]
CHEM 101 - Principles of Chemistry I [4] OR BIOL 100 - Concepts in Biology [4]

and

Two additional courses from approved list [6-8] (see advising sheet)

and

One course from the following:
STAT 121 - Introduction to Statistics for the Social Science [4]
STAT 350 - Statistics with Applications in Biological Sciences [4]
STAT 351 - Applied Statistics for Business and Economics [4]
STAT 355 - Introduction to Probability & Statistics for Science and Engineering [4]

Suggested Areas of Concentration [minimum 18 credits]
All students must take at least six upper-level courses chosen in consultation with your advisor. At least one course must be at the 400 level. One techniques course is allowed, and is restricted to GES 386. One additional physical-environment course is allowed from the list in section III. A maximum of 2 courses in the concentration may be completed from outside the department (this includes transferred courses, courses taken abroad, and courses taken in other departments at UMBC).
