UMBC offers four types of chess awards:
Chess-Player Scholars receive four-year fixed tuition, room, board, mandatory fees. For outstanding students directly from high school with high USCF chess ratings (over 2000).
UMBC Coca-Cola Chess Fellows receive four-year fixed tuition, mandatory fees, $15,000/year housing stipend. Each fellow contributes 100 hours/year community service. Also available for graduate students. For good students with extraordinary chess ratings (over 2500).
Special Merit for Chess Awards. $1,000 to $10,000 annually plus out-of-state tuition differentials. For good students with strong chess ratings (over 2300).
Tournament-Based Awards. Each year winners of U.S. Cadet Championship and Sweet 16 Finals of the Maryland Scholastic Championship receive four-year fixed tuition, mandatory fees.
Recipients must be full-time degree students, maintain 3.0 GPA, play on UMBC Chess Teams, and contribute to community service activities of Chess Club. Team members must be under age 26 on Sept. 1 of academic year. For full consideration, applications due Dec. 15. To apply, submit application for undergraduate studies; indicate interest in chess in essay. SAT (or ACT) scores required; also TOEFL for non-native English speakers. Foreign students eligible (except tournament awards).
