Hourly Graduate Student Workers
All employees who hold the title of student worker must be compensated by an hourly wage at least equal to the federal minimum wage of $7.25. Departments have the discretion, consistent with the duties of the position, to compensate a student worker above $7.25 an hour. Notwithstanding that discretion, graduate student workers performing duties similar to those of a Graduate Assistant (GA) must be compensated at an hourly wage similar in amount to that of the GA. Departments can request an opinion from the Associate Dean of the Graduate School as to whether graduate student worker duties are consistent with those of a GA.

For the purposes of stipends, Graduate Assistants include Administrative Assistants, Graders, Peaceworker Assistants, Research Assistants, Residential Assistants, Teaching Assistants, and those supported by external fellowships administered through UMBC.

A full-time Graduate Assistant has a twenty (20) hour per week commitment to the department supporting the assistantship.

A part-time Graduate Assistant has a ten (10) hour per week commitment to the department supporting the assistantship.

More information on graduate assistantships may be found in the Graduate Assistant Handbook.
