Departments have the discretion, consistent with the duties of the position, to compensate a student worker above $7.25 an hour. Notwithstanding that discretion, graduate student workers performing duties similar to those of a Graduate Assistant (GA) must be compensated at an hourly wage similar in amount to that of the GA (at least $13.13 an hour). Departments can request an opinion from the Associate Dean of the Graduate School as to whether graduate student worker duties are consistent with those of a GA. |
For the purposes of stipends, Graduate Assistants include Administrative Assistants, Graders, Peaceworker Assistants, Research Assistants, Residential Assistants, Teaching Assistants, and those supported by external fellowships administered through UMBC.
A full-time Graduate Assistant has a twenty (20) hour per week commitment to the department supporting the assistantship.
A part-time Graduate Assistant has a ten (10) hour per week commitment to the department supporting the assistantship.
More information on graduate assistantships may be found in the Graduate Assistant Handbook.
