Research and Professional Experience

Andrea L. Kalfoglou, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of sociology/anthropology in the health administration and policy program.  She has extensive experience in ethical and health-policy analysis related to human reproduction, genetics, and research ethics.  She recently completed a Research Fellowship in the Social and Behavioral Research Branch, National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health where she was the project director of the Multiplex Initiative.  Prior to her fellowship, she was the Social Science Research Coordinator at the Genetics and Public Policy Center, Berman Institute of Bioethics, Johns Hopkins University where she developed and coordinated qualitative and quantitative research to assess the public’s knowledge and attitudes about reproductive genetic technology.  Her previous empirical research includes the investigation of oocyte donors’ experiences and attitudes, which has been routinely cited as one of very few follow-up studies with oocyte donors.  Dr. Kalfoglou has staffed multiple ethics and policy committees including two Institute of Medicine committees, the President’s National Bioethics Advisory Commission, and the National Advisory Board on Ethics in Reproduction.  She is on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Bioethics, Board of Advisors for the Center for Information and Study of Clinical Research Participation, and Chair of the bioethics subcommittee of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocesan Advisory Committee on Science and Technology.

Current Research Projects

Dr. Kalfoglou is currently studying the public’s attitudes towards preconception sex selection; the ethics of use of preimplantation genetic diagnosis to create HLA matched siblings for the purpose of tissue donation; prenatal care providers’ attitudes about Cystic Fibrosis carrier screening; interest in and attitudes toward genetic testing for deafness; and the decisions that women make regarding continuing or discontinuing antidepressant drugs once they become pregnant.
