The Maryland SPCA Internship Opportunity The Maryland SPCA is celebrating its 140th anniversary in 2009, and to mark this event, we are seeking an intern to assist us with researching and compiling historical artifacts and information for display and promotional purposes. We have already made arrangements with the Maryland Historical Society to have an exhibit in spring 2009, and this work will form the nucleus of this exhibit. The Maryland SPCA was founded at the beginning of the Progressive Era in America. It was modeled after the ASPCA in New York City, which was the country’s first animal protection organization. Originally founded to protect workhorses, The Maryland SPCA evolved to protect domestic dogs and cats and dependence on horses for commerce and transportation declined. The intern, working under the direction of the Director of Development and Marketing, will conduct research about The Maryland SPCA and prepare text for displays, print and online. Source materials will include SPCA documents housed at its headquarters in Baltimore, materials stored at The Maryland Historical Society, and at The Enoch Pratt Free Library. The display at the Historical Society is envisioned to include both written materials, photographs, and a limited number of artifacts. The intern will be responsible for inventorying available materials, creating an outline for the exhibit, preparing drafts of the texts for the displays, and securing digital copies of photographs and other materials that can be used in the display and/or publications. In addition, it would be beneficial to contact descendents of founders or early leaders of The Maryland SPCA to obtain personal records or artifacts of the organization and/or oral histories. Some of the early leaders of The Maryland SPCA include some of Baltimore’s most prominent citizens, including Enoch Pratt, Alex. Brown, and Guan Hutton. As one of Baltimore’s older nonprofit organizations, a well-documented history of The Maryland SPCA will not only benefit the SPCA but could also be part of a larger history of nonprofit organizations in the region.

Unpaid part-time internships may be available at the Social Security Administration (SSA) History Archives, which is located at SSA Headquarters in the Woodlawn area of Baltimore County (6401 Security Blvd.).
The SSA History Archives is a small archival facility focused exclusively on the programs of the Social Security Act (Social Security, Medicare, welfare programs, etc.). The Archives is a multi-media site, containing approximately 1,000 linear feet of documents, more than 10,000 photographs, and hundreds of video and audio recordings. The SSA History Room is a small 800 square foot museum at the same location. The Historian’s Office at SSA also operates one of the largest Internet history sites in the federal government. The SSA Archives contains many unique collections, and some materials only accessible in this area through the SSA Archives—such as, for example, a complete set of the secret Lyndon Johnson White House recordings. Baltimore Museum of Industry
Internship Opportunities at the Baltimore Museum of Industry
Founded in 1977 as a project of the Mayor’s Office, the Baltimore Museum of Industry (BMI) educates the public and students about the rapidly disappearing industrial heritage of our region. In 1981, the BMI incorporated as a private nonprofit educational institution and moved into the historic Platt Oyster Cannery (c1865) on Key Highway.
Through the years, the BMI has grown to include nearly 6 acres of property on Baltimore’s Inner Harbor South and is utilized by local and regional residents as a recreational outlet in the heart of Baltimore City. More than 150,000 schoolchildren and general visitors enjoy the museum’s exhibits and educational programs that feature the unique history of Maryland industries and tell the stories of the people who made them work.
The BMI holds approximately 50,000 objects, 200 archival collections, 6,000 books, and 250,000 photographs and negatives in its collections. We are seeking interns to work with the collections in a number of different areas.
Internship details:
Internships are unpaid, but we are happy to work to arrange course credit. Interns are needed year-round. Available hours for the internship are Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm. We would like a commitment of at least 4 hours per week, but are flexible in regards to scheduling. Benefits of internships at the BMI include free museum membership, free parking, and the chance to develop projects tailored to your interests.
