Sandra Herbert, Professor,
Emerita
(Ph.D. Brandeis University)
Professor Herbert studies and teaches the history of science. A scholar of
Charles Darwin, she has won fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the
National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Science Foundation.
Professor Herbert has edited The Red Notebook of Charles Darwin and Charles
Darwin's Notebooks, 1836-1844. Her most recent book is Charles Darwin: Geologist which has won numerous awards, including the Geological
Society of America's 2006 Mary C. Rabbitt Award, “given annually in
recognition of outstanding contributions to the understanding of the
history of the geological sciences in the United States and abroad.”
The book is also the winner of the 2006 Suzanne J. Levinson book award from
the History of Science Society, the George L. Mosse Prize from
the American Historical Association given for an outstanding work on European
history, and the
Albion Book Prize from the North American Conference on British Studies.
Professor Herbert is a Fellow of the American
Association for the Advancement of Science and a Fellow of the Geological
Society of America.
