Accelerated Bachelors/Masters Program in History

Graduate Program Director: Dr. Constantine Vaporis vaporis@umbc.edu History majors considering earning a Masters of Arts degree in Historical Studies may apply to enter the department's accelerated B.A./M.A. program. Students should apply in the latter half of their sophomore year or as juniors in order to begin the accelerated program as second-semester juniors or as seniors. For further information, contact the Department of History.

To apply, students must be a History major, have completed HIST 201 "Introduction to the Study of History," and have earned a minimum of 60 undergraduate credits. At least 15 of these must have been earned at UMBC and no less than 9 credits need to be in 300 or 400 level history courses.  Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 overall and 3.5 in history. Students with scores of at least 3 on the CEEB Advanced Placement examinations in American and European history may also qualify for an accelerated B.A./M.A. program.

Application forms are available online as a pdf file (http://www.umbc.edu/gradschool/docs/forms/prospective_students/accelerated_BA_MA_application_form.pdf) and from the Department of History office (Administration Building 7th floor). Completed applications include:
1) B.A./M.A. Application form (this is a pdf file so you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to access the form)
2) An official UMBC transcript
3) Three letters of recommendation from UMBC faculty (at least two letters must be from members of the UMBC Department of History)
4) A personal interview with the History Graduate Program Director is also required.

Acceptance into the program neither obligates the student to complete the program beyond the B.A. nor obligates the department to accept the student into its graduate program.

A total of 9 hours will be allowed for graduate credit in the B.A./M.A. program (as well as counting as undergraduate credit for the B.A.).  All History courses designated from 600 to 798 are eligible with the exception of HIST 701-704, 798, and 799.  To earn the B.A./M.A. students must fulfill all established requirements for the B.A. in History and the M.A. in Historical Studies.

Accelerated BA/MA students must have completed HIST 496 or 497 (or in exceptional cases be concurrently enrolled in HIST 496 or 497) in order to enroll in 700-level courses.
