Life in The Honors College at UMBC
The Honors College experience involves much more than time in the classroomit brings students together with one another and with people and events throughout the Baltimore-D.C. region. Each year, The Honors College also sponsors such cultural events as visits to the Baltimore Symphony, the Shakespeare Theatre and the Kennedy Center. Honors College students have the opportunity to join the annual study-travel program to international destinations in Europe and Asia. The Honors College Council, our student organization, is an integral part of student life in the Honors College.
The Honors College Council
The Honors College Council (HCC) is a student-run social and cultural organization for all the members of The Honors College. Its activities include service projects, Lunch in the Lounge events, a student Art Showcase, and the annual Mirror Ball. The HCC executive committee meets bi-weekly in the Honors College Lounge and all students are encouraged to attend the meetings.
Study Abroad
All Honors College students are encouraged to spend time studying abroad. Spending time abroad gives students the opportunity to explore the world around them while gaining a broader context for their studies. Generally, students who wish to complete international studies during the academic year should be juniors, or possibly, first semester seniors. Students need to construct their schedule carefully in consultation with their academic advisor(s) in order to accommodate their graduation plans.
Service-Learning
Honors College students are invited to explore local and regional opportunities for experiential learning. Service-Learning courses provide unique opportunities for Honors students to enhance their educational experience at UMBC by enabling them to become engaged in actual practice and reflection upon community service. Students may take HONR 390 to earn academic credit for service-learning, but must first arrange a service-learning placement through the Shriver Center, then meet with The Honors College director to request permission to enroll.
Summer Scholarships
The Honors College has limited funds available for members of the College to pursue their studies or research during the winter or summer sessions. The College particularly encourages members to apply for support for research and/or special projects. Scholarships will be awarded for both study in this country and abroad; small research awards may be used to defray such expenses as travel (i.e. to work in libraries or conduct interviews) or obtaining copies of documents. Past awards have ranged from $110-$1,500. Calls for applications are made early in the fall and spring semesters.
