Information and Resources for Understanding the
Affordable Care Act (ACA)

And Accessing Available Benefits

As employees of UMBC, you received information from the University System of Maryland Chancellor’s Office regarding the Affordable Care Act Individual Mandate, as well as a notice from the State Department of Budget & Management outlining general information and requirements for medical and prescription coverage.

Chancellor's Letter to Employees Ineligible for State Benefits Subsidy

Health Insurance Marketplace Coverage Options and Your Health Care

As outlined in both notices, the new ACA is complex.  With this in mind, the State of Maryland has developed the Maryland Health Connection (MHC), a new health insurance marketplace that allows the opportunity for medical coverage that will meet the requirements of the new Affordable Care Act (ACA).  The MHC will open October 1, 2013.

The MHC allows you will be able to shop for affordable plan coverage, make apples-to-apples comparisons and determine your eligibility for financial assistance (tax credits) to reduce the cost of your monthly insurance premiums. A single, streamlined application will determine your eligibility for Medicaid or private insurance and walk you through the process. Consumer assistance will also be available through the MHC Call Center or in-person throughout the state in Local Health Departments, Departments of Social Services, and a network of consumer assistance organizations known as “Connector Entities.”

If you are ineligible for subsidized benefit coverage with your employer, MHC provides the following:

Consumer Resource assistance from dedicated Customer Service Representatives
