The Department of Human Resources would like to congratulate Mary Welsh and Pamela Hawley on receiving this honor.

Mary Welsh, Administrative Assistant for the Department of Ancient Studies, has been named UMBC’s Nonexempt Employee of the Quarter effective October 1 to December 31, 2009. Mary began her career at UMBC in 2000 as an administrative assistant for the Department of English.  She transferred to her current position in Ancient Studies in February 2006.

Mary was nominated by Dr. Marilyn Y. Goldberg, Chair of the Department of Ancient Studies. “When Mary arrived as the Ancient Studies Department Administrative Assistant, there were no recorded regular procedures, no systematized record keeping system, and no centralized document organization,” says Goldberg. “She has created a superiorly run office in her three years here. Her people and customer service skills are excellent. Previously the department Chair was responsible for all Chair’s duties, as well as many of the Administrative Assistant’s duties. Now as Chair, I can depend on her excellent support in every area of administration, from the individual student level, to the course level, all the way up to the special programs run by the department.”

“Mary has created a multi-volume handbook for the Ancient Studies Department Administrative Assistant that includes all tasks, deadlines, special procedures, SA, HR, and other new and ever more complicated procedures. She has created from scratch almost all the systems that keep a department running. She is able to provide all data that I need as a Chair immediately. Her control of the complicated organization and finances of the Ancient Studies Study/Travel program is exemplary. She has systematized the procedures for running the annual Ancient Studies Week events.  My ability to perform so successfully as a Chair, both in the regular work of my position and in the outreach and new initiatives I have started, would not be possible without her help and backup. Having held the position of Chair for six years before my current six year term, I can contrast the work of Mary with the others who held the same position. It is like night and day. We all owe a debt of gratitude to people like Mary, who give it all, whether to students or faculty members.

Mary received her award at a presentation on October 7, 2009 which was attended by faculty and staff of the Ancient Studies Department.  After the presentation, a luncheon celebration was held in the Skylight Room.

Pamela Hawley, Associate Director of the Office of the Registrar, has been UMBC’s Exempt Employee of the Quarter effective October 1 to December 31, 2009. Pam earned her Bachelor’s degree in English at UMBC and began her career as a student employee.  After graduation, Pam worked at various universities and in 1997 she returned to her alma mater accepting the position of Assistant Registrar. She was promoted during her years in the Registrar’s Office and in 2007 became the Associate Director.

Pamela was nominated by Sandra R. Baldeo-Lindsay, Academic Program Specialist of the Office of the Registrar.  “I have known Pam since 2006 and I have seen what a dedicated worker she is,” says Baldeo-Lindsay. “She is always there to help anyone in our department and on campus with whatever they need. Being an Associate Registrar, she is the type of leader that encourages her staff to work to the best of their ability.”

“Pam is our PeopleSoft lead. She has made this difficult transition much easier and works with us one on one. Pam comes in at 6:00 a.m. and leaves when the work is done. She works on weekends and peace and quiet are not something she has enjoyed for the past months. I feel very confident that Pam will bring this office and help the faculty and staff through the PeopleSoft implementation.”

“Despite being busy, Pam always has the time to stop to say hello to everyone and to inquire about their well-being. On occasion, I will even have lunch with her. I know Pam is very involved with many things but I do not know how much time she is giving to those activities with her living and breathing PeopleSoft.”

Pamela received her award at a surprise presentation during a staff meeting on October 6, 2009.  The Office of the Registrar staff congratulated Pam and everyone enjoyed a slice of cake.

Each recipient will receive a check for $500, a personalized parking space, one day of administrative leave, a certificate, his/her name on the Employee of the Quarter plaque and an invitation to the annual Service Award Ceremony for all the recipients.

Human Resources offers special thanks to everyone that nominated an employee for the award. Previous nominations received will be eligible for consideration for one year from the date received. The next Employee of the Quarter recipients will be selected in January.
