RESPONSIBILITIES:The incumbent will take a leadership role in the vision, design, and management of an evolving library web presence in order to meet the needs of the students, faculty, and staff of the University. Specific duties include: responsibility for ongoing analysis of the Library’s web architecture and improving the user experience, and creating a holistic web design to streamline access to services and resources; chairing the Library Web Committee; designing and delivering appropriate training and documentation in support of all library staff and units; working closely with librarians and other library staff to identify, develop and implement web delivery of resources, services, and information; working with appropriate Library UMBC Information Technology staff to develop and maintain equipment and software; assisting with library assessment projects; providing reference and instruction services, including some nights and weekends; and serving as liaison to academic departments; maintaining an aptitude for current technologies and research emerging technologies and recommending changes when appropriate; and performing other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Requires an American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master’s of Library Science (MLS) degree. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications: demonstrated web programming ability in a commonly used programming language such as PHP, Perl, or C++;experience with JavaScript and MySQL; demonstrated ability in database and web architecture, design, and development; demonstrated ability to think critically and analytically, to study problems and develop well-reasoned and supported solutions; skill in translating student and faculty needs into web functions; experience in assisting library users with online resources in an academic library; effective communication and teaching skills; and the ability to work well with others and lead projects to completion. Professional library experience preferred. Experience with XML and building mobile sites with HTML, XHTML, CSS and jQuery also preferred. Graphic design experience a plus. SALARY:Position is a 12-month library faculty appointment at anticipated rank of Librarian I or II. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Minimum salary: $50,000, comprehensive benefits. The successful candidate will be expected to meet library and university requirements for reappointment, promotion, and permanent status.
