STUDY ABROAD

Humanities scholars are required to study abroad for one semester, and their scholarship award is applied to their study abroad experience. Guided by UMBC’s Study Abroad Office and the Humanities Scholars Program Director, students select a program that matches their academic and career goals and return from the experience with an appreciation of foreign culture, a more global perspective and an renewed enthusiasm for the humanities. They also have wonderful stories to tell.

Scholars begin to plan their study abroad in the second semester of their freshman year. They meet individually and in groups with a Study Abroad Coordinator to ask preliminary questions and to begin thinking about their desired study abroad experience. They interact with other students who have studied abroad and learn of the myriad of possibilities available to them. In their sophomore year, students being applying to study abroad programs and engage in necessary coursework (in foreign languages, etc.) to prepare for their travels. Most Humanities Scholars study abroad for one semester during their junior year.
