Avian Flu

Suggested precautions for persons dealing with migratory birds may be found on a variety of governmental websites, including PandemicFlu.gov and AvianFlu.gov.  Additional information may also be found on the Maryland Department of Agriculture website (www.mda.state.md.us/) as well as the Maryland Flu Preparedness site (flu.maryland.gov/).

Recommendations for bird researchers for protecting against avian flu (from Mr. Bob  Nielsen,  UMBC Office of Environmental Safety and Health):  Wash your hands frequently. Personal protection to consider equipment includes N95 respirators, poly apron, coveralls, inner and outer nitrile gloves, indirect vent goggles, boot/shoe covers,  antiseptic wipes.  Avian Influenza personal protection kits are available from SAFEWARE  at (800) 331-6707.
