Fraud Prevention and Detection FeeThe Department of Homeland Security requires the payment of fees for each H-1B petition filed. These fees are paid by the UMBC hiring department with separate working fund checks made payable to “Department of Homeland Security”. The checks needed are one for $320 for the actual filing of the petition; another check for $500 for any new H-1B petition to cover the cost associated with fraud prevention and detection; and, in some cases, a third check for $1,000 if the case is to be expedited through the premium processing system. This may not be necessary in certain circumstance, depending upon the timeline in each case. The Director of IES will help determine if the premium processing route is necessary.
