How to Extend Your Program of Study

The program-extension process does not require DHS adjudication or a formal authorization of extension of stay. It is a process whereby the IES office verifies your criteria for eligibility and enters into the SEVIS database your new expected completion date. You need to come to the IES office with your old I-20, passport and I-94 forms, as well as a printout of your transcript from myUMBC. You will also need a letter from your academic advisor explaining the reasons for the extension, certifying that you are making reasonable progress towards your degree, and giving a new expected completion date. We will issue you a new I-20 which will extend your program of study. You should keep this I-20 with your others - don't throw the old ones away!

Be sure to do this within 30 days prior to the expected completion date on your initial I-20 for your current level or program. Additional documentation is needed only in the case of illness.
