F-1 Student Transfer ProcedureHow the transfer process worksIf you are currently attending another school in the United States as an F-1 student, you will be required to transfer your SEVIS record from the school you are currently attending to UMBC. The international office at your current school will need to indicate in the SEVIS system that you will be coming to UMBC. They will need to list our correct SEVIS school code (BAL214F00062000) and the correct listing for our school (University of Maryland, Baltimore County). They will also need to indicate the exact date that your record will be released from their control to ours (called a release date). Until that date they will be able to cancel the transfer or make changes to your record, and we will be unable to view your record at all. Once the transfer date arrives, they will be able to view some fields but change nothing, while we will be able to see your complete record and make changes to the information listed. If you have any doubts about transferring to a different school, our suggestion is that you wait until you resolve those doubts before requesting that your record be released. Once the transfer has happened it is difficult to reverse. This information is for students in F-1 transferring from another school in the United States to UMBC. If you are planning to travel outside the U.S. before beginning your studies at UMBC, please follow the process described in number 1 below. If you plan to remain in the U.S. until you begin your studies at UMBC, please follow the process described in number 2 below. 1. If you travel outside the U.S. before beginning your studies at UMBC, you should use a SEVIS I-20 form issued by UMBC when you reenter the U.S. The border inspector should stamp the new form. Please note that if your entry visa has expired, you will need to apply for a new visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate. You should present your UMBC I-20 form, a valid passport and evidence of financial ability in order to obtain a new entry visa. It would also be helpful to have a copy of your transcript from previous schools. If your entry visa has not expired, you can use it to reenter the U.S. to study at UMBC. It does not matter that the unexpired visa was issued with the name of your previous school. 2. If you plan to remain in the U.S. until coming to UMBC, you will need to submit the following documents to the International Education Services (IES) office:
b. Photocopies of your I-94 (both sides) c. Photocopies of any and all I-20s previously issued to you (both sides) International Education Services 224 Administration Bldg. 1000 Hilltop Circle Baltimore, MD 21250 Tel: +1.410.455-2624 Fax: +1.410.455-1130 E-mail: ies@umbc.edu |
