All UMBC students are required to register for a study abroad place holder in the UMBC registration sytem. These place holders tell the UMBC registration system that you are studying abroad, that you are currently a full-time student, and that you are eligible to transfer financial aid or scholarships to a study abroad program.
UMBC has three different study abroad place holders. Students register for the appropriate place holder, depending on the program they participate in:
- AWAY 095: For students participating in summer and January term programs earning 3-5 credits.
- AWAY 096: For students participating in summer programs earning six or more credits.
- AWAY 098: For students participating in UMBC Exchange programs (but not for the ISEP program).
- AWAY 099: For students participating in all UMBC Direct and UMBC Affiliate programs
You can register for your place holder after you have submitted your completed Verification of Transferability form to the Study Abroad Office. The Registrar's Office will send you a confirmation e-mail that permits you to enroll . You are responsible for enrolling yourself in the appropriate course.
