Students frequently ask about additional scholarship opportunities in order to finance their study abroad experiences. Below are a few of the scholarships available for UMBC students.
Some UMBC departments offer scholarships for their students to participate on study abroad programs, as does the Honors College for students on short-term study abroad programs (January and summer term programs). Check your department to see if you are eligible for any departmental awards.

Other Scholarship Opportunities
Maryland International Education Association
For US citizens and Maryland residents, attending any Maryland college or university of any approved study abroad program. Applications are due on April 14 and October 14.
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Competition for awards for study abroad, for US citizen students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university.
National Security Education Program: David L. Boren Education Scholarships
NSEP gives preference to students who will study in particular countries; who will study particular languages; who will study particular fields; who will study abroad for a full academic year; and who will make a commitment to a career in federal service.
Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarships
The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. While abroad, scholars serve as ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Scholarships are for academic year programs only. Students may apply through the Catonsville Rotary Club or through the Rotary Club of their permanent residence.
Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Scholarship
The Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Scholarship is for any student attending a Phi Kappa Phi-affiliated university (UMBC is one) who wishes to study abroad. There are no restrictions on study abroad destinations, but awards are for semester or academic year study only. Awards are typically $1000.00.
DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdiesnt/German Academic Exchange Service) Scholarships
DAAD Undergraduate Scholarships are geared toward students participating in semester or academic year study abroad programs at any German university. Scholarships are available either as part of an organized study abroad program or as part of an individual, student-designed study abroad semester or year.
Golden Key Honour Society Study Abroad Scholarships
Any UMBC Golden Key International Honour Society member who is participating on any accredited study abroad program in any country may apply for this scholarship. Awards are typically $1000.00.
