UMBC merit scholarships can be used for any approved semester-length program. They cannot be used for summer or January term programs. Some scholars have successfully petitioned to have their scholarship transfer for a full academic year program, or for two separate semester-length programs.
Merit Scholarships
Once you have been accepted to a study abroad program, you can obtain an official study abroad budget from the UMBC Study Abroad Office. This budget outlines all of the costs involved in studying abroad: your program fee or tuition at your host university, airfare, room and board, books, and your passport and student visa. You should then present this budget, along with your admissions letter, to Bobbie Shahpazian, Associate Director of Scholarships. She will then arrange for the transfer of the full dollar amount of your scholarship as if you were here on campus. You will be responsible for any additional costs not covered by your scholarship funds.
Meyerhoff Scholarships
Meyerhoff Scholars follow a similar procedure for transfering their scholarship funds. After you have been admitted to your study abroad program, you should request a study abroad budget from the UMBC Study Abroad Office. This budget outlines all of the costs involved in studying abroad: your program fee or tuition at your host university, airfare, room and board, books, and your passport and student visa. You will present this budget, a copy of your admissions letter, and your completed Verification of Transferability form to Mr. LaMont Toliver in the Meyerhoff Scholarship Office. After he has confirmed that your study abroad program will meet the on-campus requirements of the Meyerhoff Scholars Program, he will arrange for the release of your scholarship funds. You will be responsible for any additional costs not covered by your scholarship funds.
