Billing Policies

UMBC's AWAY registration system tells the UMBC Bursar's Office what your student should be billed for the period he or she is studying abroad.   It will also determine how any applicable scholarships and financial aid will be refunded.

  • AWAY 095: Students enrolled in this section will receive a tuition and fee bill of $0.00.  Any loan amounts due to a student will  be refunded to him or her by UMBC.  These funds are then used to pay the student's program provider or international institution.
  • AWAY 098:  Students enrolled in this section will be billed for their regular tuition and fees (in-state or out-of-state rates apply) for the semester or academic year they are gone.  Any scholarships or financial aid left over after these charges are paid will then be refunded to the student by UMBC.
  • AWAY 099:  Students enrolled in this section will receive a tuition and fee bill of $0.00.  Any loan amounts due to the student will  be refunded to him or her by UMBC.  These funds are then used to pay the student's program provider or international institution.
  • The only exception to this rule is for students participating in the UMBC in Mexico program.  Students enroll in AWAY 099, but will receive a charge to their student accounts for a program fee.

Students alone are responsible for making certain that they follow UMBC procedures for assuring the transfer of their financial aid and scholarships to their program provider or international institution.  UMBC's Bursar's Office cannot do so on their behalf.  They are also responsible for following their program provider's or international institution's billing policies.  Failure to do so can result in the cancellation of their registration at UMBC for subsequent semesters and the placement of a registration hold on their UMBC account.
