The Study Abroad Office urges students who are studying abroad to select a trusted parent or other person to receive Power of Attorney to take care of unanticipated financial and personal affairs, such as bills and UMBC course and/or housing registration, while they are out of the country.
The power of attorney agreement allows others to make payments to a student’s account and sign important documents on his or her behalf. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships can draw up a power of attorney agreement for your student. The student will need to provide them with the following information:
- His or her name, permanent address, telephone number and social security number;His or her bank’s name, address and telephone number;
- The name of the person who will have power of attorney, this person’s address and telephone number.
It will be useful for the student to send copies of his or her power of attorney agreement to his or her local bank, the UMBC Office of Academic Services, and to any other agency which cannot regularly give out information about him or her without his or her expressed written permission.
