Your safety is of highest priority while abroad. Please remember that all of us working at the UMBC Study Abroad Office have lived and traveled extensively overseas. We love it, and that is why we do what we do. But we also know that bad things can happen overseas, and we want you to be safe.
Please always keep the following information in mind:
- If you tell your parents that you will call them at a particular time, call them! Remember, it is illegal for the Study Abroad Office to give your name to anyone unless you have given us permission to. If someone calls wanting your address, we will not even confirm that you are studying abroad. If you want people to know where you are, you must tell them – federal law prohibits us from doing so.
- Always abide by the rules of the program you are on. The rules are there for your safety. If your host university or your program wishes to dismiss you, we will support them in their decision.
