Entrepreneurship Programming at the
Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET)

Institutional Overview:

The Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET) is home to one of the largest group of scientists in the world addressing marine and environmental research through molecular approaches. IMET is a joint University System of Maryland research institute capitalizing on the strengths of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES), the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). IMET integrates research excellence with graduate education, training and economic development.  IMET’s principal mission is to spawn new ideas and projects that result in economic growth in Maryland in the areas of human health and the health of the coastal environment.

IMET currently leads three programs in entrepreneurship:  the Ratcliffe Environmental Entrepreneurs Fellowship Program, the IMET Business Incubator (EBI) and Baltimore Entrepreneurial Offices Hours.

The Ratcliffe Environmental Entrepreneurs Fellowship (REEF) Program

IMET’s recently established Ratcliffe Environmental Entrepreneurs Fellowship Program (REEF) is helping young scientists cultivate the leadership and business skills necessary to bring their research into commercial markets. REEF is giving students a more informed appreciation of the potential business implications of their research - both for those who wish to start their own business and others interested in careers with established companies.  The program includes fellowships for select students, short courses on basic business principles, externships with established companies and start-ups, and seed funding for students with viable ideas for new company formation.

The program launched in the fall of 2014 and covered the following topics with a strong group of guest lecturers, several of whom have continued to mentor our students:

  • Introduction and Creativity Exercises
  • Intellectual Property Development and Management- Good vs. Great
  • Marketing & Strategic Communications
