2006 PETROVICH LECTURE

Magic, Mathematics, and Masonry

The ninth annual Petrovich Lecture, held in the Albin O. Kuhn Library on February 22, 2006, featured magician, mathematician and 33rd Mason Dr. S. Brent Morris. After stumping the audience with card tricks, Dr. Morris explained the connections between card shuffling and the mathematical basis of computer technology.
In his professional career, Dr. Morris served in the National Security Agency in the Cryptologic Mathematician Program. He is a former Governor of the Mathematical Association of America and currently lectures in Systems Engineering at George Washington University.
Dr. Morris, a Freemason since 1971, also serves as Managing Editor for The Scottish Rite Journal. His new book, The Idiot's Guide to Freemasonry, will be released on May 2. This volume will answer all your questions about Freemasonry, even those in the best selling novel The DaVinci Code.
In describing the influences and pathways that have led him to his multifaceted career, Dr. Morris urged all listeners to be interdisciplinary in their thinking and to seek a well rounded education.
Co sponsors for the lecture included: Friends of the Library, Education, Political Science, Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering, and Biological Sciences. Special thanks to Truc Nguyen for designing the program flier. This annual lecture series is named in honor of the late INDS Director, Dr. Slobodan B. Petrovich.
