UMBC Cross Country Teams Sweep First Place at Maryland State Cross Country Championships

The UMBC men's and women's cross country teams swept both meets to take home first place at the Maryland State Cross Country Championships held at Hagerstown Community College. Cara Wettlaufer captured first place in the women's 3.3 mile meet and Izudin Mehmedovic took first place in the men's 8K run as all-five Retrievers scores on the women's and men's side placed in the top-10 overall.

Randy Monroe has been promoted to head men's basketball coach at UMBC, Director of Athletics Charles Brown announced. Monroe has been an assistant coach at UMBC since the Retrievers' 1994-95 season.

Men's Swimming/Diving Capture America East Championships

After dominating the ECAC and Northeast Conference (NEC) for the past several years, the UMBC men's and women's swimming and diving teams recently extended their dominance into their new home in the America East Conference, as the teams ended their seasons with a school-best 12-1 record on both sides.To top it all off, the Retriever men, who previously claimed six consecutive ECAC titles, captured UMBC's first America East Conference crown. The women, who won four NEC titles in the last five years, placed second overall.

Softball's Lisa Boone and track and field standout Huguens Jean were named UMBC's Outstanding Athletes at the annual Varsity Awards Ceremony.

Basketball's Jessie Brown, and soccer's Brian Rowland and lacrosse's Tim Flanagan shared the Outstanding Senior Athlete award. Track and field standout Sherita Baker and swimmer Karl Strauss were presented the Matt Skalsky Outstanding Scholar Athlete award.

A Coach's Life

UMBC has a rich baseball tradition. After several appearances in the NCAA Tournament as a Division II program, the 1992 team became UMBC's first squad to participate in the NCAA Division I Championships. Last season, with a balanced hitting attack and clutch pitching, John Jancuska's team won the Northeast Conference Tournament and went back to the NCAA's. Coach Jancuska achieved his 500th career victory in 2001 and has seen two of his pitchers, Jay Witasick (San Francisco Giants) and Wayne Franklin (Houston Astros) make it to the major leagues. In his 25th season at the helm, Jancuska still has the same enthusiasm he had when he came to UMBC as a 24-year-old head coach in 1978.
