Jay Greene and Brian Hodges are among the nominees for America East Men's Basketball Fans' Choice Player of the Year.

The UMBC men's swimming and diving team capped a perfect season by claiming the America East title with a score of 920 points, while the Retriever women took third place with a mark of 502.

Randy Monroe has been promoted to head men's basketball coach at UMBC, Director of Athletics Charles Brown announced. Monroe has been an assistant coach at UMBC since the Retrievers' 1994-95 season.

After dominating the ECAC and Northeast Conference (NEC) for the past several years, the UMBC men's and women's swimming and diving teams recently extended their dominance into their new home in the America East Conference, as the teams ended their seasons with a school-best 12-1 record on both sides.To top it all off, the Retriever men, who previously claimed six consecutive ECAC titles, captured UMBC's first America East Conference crown. The women, who won four NEC titles in the last five years, placed second overall.

America East newcomer UMBC is the preseason favorite to win the men's lacrosse conference title this year, according to the coaches' poll.

UMBC has built a tradition of successful student-athletes who are not only great competitors at their sports, but also provide leadership on and off the field. High jumper Ed Warner confirmed his place in this elite group with his participation in the NCAA's Leadership Conference, held last summer in Orlando, Florida.

This season, Retriever lax player Pat Muston was handed the full-time task of handling UMBC's face-offs duties. His name doesn't appear in print and on air as much as it did in previous years, but he couldn't be happier with his contribution to the team.

The America East Conference will add University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) to its membership. UMBC will join the conference in all sports for the 2003-04 academic year.

Astrid Sperling is a talented swimmer who hails from Halle, Germany, a town south of Berlin. A junior interdisciplinary studies major, Sperling is gearing up for the United States Nationals, where she will compete in the 100 and 200 backstroke.

March, 9, 2003. Datelines, Ithaca, New York; Stony Brook, New York; Elon College, North Carolina; Boston, Massachusetts; and Fairfield, Connecticut. In all of these towns on a seasonal Sunday afternoon, the refrain of a UMBC Retrievers' victory was heard loud and clear.

The Major Indoor Soccer League announced that Blast rookie forward and UMBC alumnus P.J. Wakefield has been added to the MISL EasternConference All-Star Team. The All-Star Game will be played this Sunday, March 9 at the Bradley Center at 1:30 p.m. Central time.

Outside of Hilltop Circle, expectations are not particularly high for either UMBC men's or women's basketball this season. But the coaching staffs and players on both Tom Sullivan's men's team and Phil Stern's women's team are both thinking about playing a prominent role in the Northeast Conference races this year.

Brian Rowland is a man who wears many hats -- student, soccer goalkeeper/captain, and now he has added one more to his collection: record breaker. During UMBC's October 26 homecoming game against New Jersey's Monmouth University, Rowland earned his 23rd career shutout.

UMBC is blessed with many outstanding head coaches, a group of dedicated professionals that have helped build the Retrievers into one of this region's most respected athletic programs. One member of that coaching fraternity, Head Men's Soccer Coach Pete Caringi, recently achieved a major milestone in his career, earning his 300th (currently 302-105-22) career collegiate coaching victory on September 1 of this season.

On August 6, UMBC Director of Athletics Charles Brown announced the hiring of Phil Stern as head women's basketball coach. Stern, the eighth head coach in UMBC's history, has spent the last four seasons as the head coach at the University of South Carolina-Aiken (Division II).

Senior Cleopatra Borel won the women's shot put in the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships, held at the University of Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Center on March 9.

UMBC has a rich baseball tradition. After several appearances in the NCAA Tournament as a Division II program, the 1992 team became UMBC's first squad to participate in the NCAA Division I Championships. Last season, with a balanced hitting attack and clutch pitching, John Jancuska's team won the Northeast Conference Tournament and went back to the NCAA's. Coach Jancuska achieved his 500th career victory in 2001 and has seen two of his pitchers, Jay Witasick (San Francisco Giants) and Wayne Franklin (Houston Astros) make it to the major leagues. In his 25th season at the helm, Jancuska still has the same enthusiasm he had when he came to UMBC as a 24-year-old head coach in 1978.

Nobody ever expects a freshman to take a leadership role on the basketball court - especially not one who was considered to begin his career at the bottom rungs of the depth chart. Perhaps this is why Rob Gogerty has surprised everyone, and thus far, has become the only Retriever to start in every game of the 2001-02 season.
