Because we have received questions about the campus response to the current swine flu health alert, we want to provide this additional update to the UMBC community. While we currently do not have a confirmed swine flu case on campus, University Health Services is encouraging students, faculty and staff to take preventive measures and learn about flu symptoms and treatment.

Shortly before 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 25, Baltimore County and UMBC Police were called to the scene of an apparent suicide approximately 100 yards from the Technology Research Center (TRC) building, near Westland Blvd. in Arbutus. It was quickly determined that the situation posed no threat to the campus, and we have learned that the deceased has no known affiliation with UMBC.

On March 14, the men's basketball team will compete in the America East Championships at Binghamton. Student tickets will go on sale at The Commons Information Desk at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 9. A valid UMBC ID must be presented to purchase these tickets. Additional ticket

Our Daily Bread, one of the oldest and largest soup kitchens in the Baltimore region, recently wrote supporters to say that the demand for free meals is up by 100 people per day at a time when contributions are down 20 percent. Scores of nonprofit agencies in Maryland are in the midst of the same perfect storm, making the success of this year’s Maryland Charity Campaign more important than ever before.

The 30th Annual W.E.B. DuBois Lecture will be held Wednesday, November 12 at 7 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom. Molefi Kete Asante, a professor in the Department of African American Studies at Temple University, will discuss DuBois and Africa: The Convergence of Consciousness. The event is free and open to the public.

In recognition of his commitment to education and equal opportunity, Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, III, president of UMBC, has received the 2008 Frederick Douglass Award. Presented by Chancellor William E. Kirwan and the Board of Regents of the University System of Maryland (USM), the award honors individuals "who have displayed an extraordinary and active commitment to the ideals of freedom, equality, justice, and opportunity exemplified in the life of Frederick Douglass."

Each year, the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents honors a select group of staff for their exceptional achievements and contributions to their institutions. This year, five of the six USM Board of Regents Staff Awards for 2007-08 were awarded to members of the UMBC community.

In our continuing efforts to maintain and improve the campus, Facilities Management
has scheduled a road closure for Poplar Avenue on Saturday, August 9, beginning at 7 a.m. and continuing until 5 p.m. This closure is necessary for sealing and restriping the roadway.

Faculty and staff parking permits for the upcoming academic year go on sale August 12. The faculty/staff parking permit annual cost in FY2009 will be $260.

This fall marks the first time that UMBC has enrolled more than 12,000 students — 12,041. This fall’s enrollments include 1,439 new first-time freshmen (with an average combined SAT of 1,191), 1,113 new transfer students (up 142 from fall 2006), and 881 new graduate students (up 112 from fall 2006). Especially encouraging are the increased retention rate of first-year, full-time freshmen (82.0 percent to 84.4 percent) and the 8.2-percent increase in the total number of graduate students.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is pleased to host David E. Keyes from Columbia University for a colloquium talk on Friday, October 26. Keyes is a distinguished researcher in scientific and parallel computing working on large-scale problems from many applications including Department of Energy applications areas. As the Vice President of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), Keyes is particularly interested in technical dialogs with engineers, physicists and computer scientists. Years of partnership between environmental and water scientists at UMBC and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) are now etched in bricks and mortar. The subject of bias in our media is one that gets many people's hearts racing right around election time. And that is just what Patricia La Noue, director of interdisciplinary studies, had in mind when choosing this year's topic for the annual Mosaic Roundtable Forum on October 27. Alicia Wilson, a UMBC Public Affairs Scholar and former valedictorian at Mergenthaler HS (Baltimore), has been awarded the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship, awarded annually to 75 outstanding college juniors who are preparing for careers in government. Wilson is majoring in political science and plans to pursue joint degrees in public interest law and urban policy after completing her studies at UMBC.

Researchers from UMBC and Achillion Pharmaceuticals announced the discovery of a new target on the HIV molecule that could potentially lead to a new class of drugs to fight the virus that causes AIDS. The study, headed by Michael Summers, UMBC professor of chemistry/biochemistry and Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator, is featured on the cover of this week's Journal of Molecular Biology.

The issue of academic integrity has been around perhaps as long as the schoolhouse, but is somewhat difficult to define - cheating to one person may be group work to another. An academic integrity steering committee and three subcommittees were formed in November 2001 and charged with finding ways to enhance academic honor and foster a culture of academic integrity at UMBC.

UMBC has been named one of a dozen "Hot Schools" by the Kaplan/Newsweek 2003 "How to Get Into College" guide, which hit newsstands across the country on August 26.

As we approach the first anniversary of September 11, 2001, UMBC students, faculty and staff are working together to organize events that honor the U.S. citizens and foreign nationals -- including alumna Angela Houtz '96 -- who lost their lives, and allow us to reflect on a national tragedy without precedent. More than 1,400 undergraduate and more than 200 graduate students will receive their degrees at UMBC's undergraduate and graduate commencement ceremonies.

Two UMBC students have received the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for 2002-2003. Dan Ilkovitch and Tomasz Macura were two of only 309 students in the nation to win the award.

The Legislative session ended April 8, and UMBC must now examine what lawmakers' decisions mean for our budget.

Five UMBC faculty members have been recognized by the Board of Regents for their outstanding contributions to teaching, mentoring, research and inter-USM-campus collaboration. The Regents' Awards are given annually in recognition of faculty excellence across the University System of Maryland.This year's recipients are Joel Liebman, chemistry and biochemistry, for research; Edward Orser, American studies, for teaching; Phyllis Robinson, biological sciences, for mentoring; Phillip Sokolove, biological sciences, for teaching; Raymond Starr, psychology, for inter-USM-campus collaboration with Maureen Black and Howard Dubowitz of UMB.

In a few months, weather forecasters across the globe will be able to make better long-range predictions thanks in part to UMBC physics professor Larrabee Strow.

Moving Plans into Action, the Planning Leadership Team's second semi-annual report to the campus, is now available on the Provost's website. The report tracks progress in implementing the recommendations of task forces and will continue to be updated each semester as the University moves through the three-to-five year time horizon established in the planning process.

The Graduate School will host its first recruitment weekend for under-represented minorities April 12-13. The event, Graduate Horizons, is part of a Graduate School initiative to recruit more minority students to UMBC's Ph.D. programs.

Members of the Task Force on the Arts and the Center for the Humanities will sponsor an Open Forum on the Arts and Humanities at UMBC at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 1 in the U.C. Ballroom. The event will be attended by President Freeman Hrabowski, Provost Arthur Johnson and Dean of Arts and Sciences Rickey Welch, as well as students, staff and faculty from across campus.

Now that The Commons is open for business, the campus community has had a chance to explore the $35 million building. Insights caught up on the latest developments and got some feedback from folks eating, working and just hanging out in the building.

Driven by increasing numbers of graduate students and improved undergraduate retention, enrollment this semester has increased significantly from spring 2001. The total headcount has increased by 498 students, a 4.9 percent increase.

Thanks to the generosity of 290 of our colleagues, the Faculty/Staff portion of the Campaign for UMBC has raised $179,388 through February of this fiscal year. Total giving by faculty and staff during the campaign to date is $1,178,981. The campaign will continue through June 30, 2002.

UMBC's latest milestone is the 20th anniversary of UMBC's Women's Studies Program. During March 2002--also Women's History Month--the program has much to celebrate as it marks its anniversary.

Preminda Jacob, assistant professor of visual arts; Christoph Irmscher, assistant professor of English; and Barbara Mennel, assistant professor of modern languages and linguistics, were named UMBC Research Fellows for the 2002-2003 academic year.

On Wednesday, February 20, the UMBC College of Engineering Industrial Advisory Board will honor James F. Pitts as the 2002 Engineer of the Year. Pitts is Vice President and General Manager of the Aerospace Systems Division of Northrop Grumman Corporation's Electronic Systems Sector.

Ron Schwartz, co-coordinator of UMBC's ESOL/Bilingual M.A. program, will be awarded an honorary doctorate from Sookmyung University (SMU), one of Korea's most prestigious women's universities, on February 25.
