From Police Chief Williams: Apparent Suicide Outside TRC
Shortly before 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 25, Baltimore County and UMBC Police were called to the scene of an apparent suicide approximately 100 yards from the Technology Research Center (TRC) building, near Westland Blvd. in Arbutus. It was quickly determined that the situation posed no threat to the campus, and we have learned that the deceased has no known affiliation with UMBC. Read Full Article

Our Daily Bread, one of the oldest and largest soup kitchens in the Baltimore region, recently wrote supporters to say that the demand for free meals is up by 100 people per day at a time when contributions are down 20 percent. Fall Enrollment Sets Record
This fall marks the first time that UMBC has enrolled more than 12,000 students — 12,041. This fall’s enrollments include 1,439 new first-time freshmen (with an average combined SAT of 1,191), 1,113 new transfer students (up 142 from fall 2006), and 881 new graduate students (up 112 from fall 2006). Especially encouraging are the increased retention rate of first-year, full-time freshmen (82.0 percent to 84.4 percent) and the 8.2-percent increase in the total number of graduate students.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is pleased to host David E. Keyes from Columbia University for a colloquium talk on Friday, October 26. Keyes is a distinguished researcher in scientific and parallel computing working on large-scale problems from many applications including Department of Energy applications areas. As the Vice President of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), Keyes is particularly interested in technical dialogs with engineers, physicists and computer scientists. Years of partnership between environmental and water scientists at UMBC and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) are now etched in bricks and mortar. UMBC Research Park Welcomes IT Firm, NASA Centers to Second Building
UMBC announced that three new tenants have agreed to move into the second building in bwtech@UMBC, the University's on-campus research and technology park. The new arrivals include the award-winning information technology firm BDMetrics, Inc.; the $148 million NASA Goddard Earth Sciences and Technology Center; and all UMBC departments related to technology transfer and entrepreneurship education. The subject of bias in our media is one that gets many people's hearts racing right around election time. And that is just what Patricia La Noue, director of interdisciplinary studies, had in mind when choosing this year's topic for the annual Mosaic Roundtable Forum on October 27. The panel will be comprised of four distinguished UMBC faculty: Thomas Schaller (political science), Christopher Corbett (English), Jason Loviglio (American studies) and Susan Dwyer (philosophy), who will serve as moderator. UMBC Stands Out In "Purple Cow" Competition
UMBC and companies with UMBC connections had a distinct presence at the Greater Baltimore Technology Council's annual TechNite awards ceremony in October. Four of the twelve nominees for "Purple Cow" awards named for the best seller by entrepreneur Seth Godin and given to innovators whose new approaches stand out from the competition had links to UMBC, and two of them took home "Purple Cow" awards. Public Affairs Scholar Wins National Public Service Scholarship
Alicia Wilson, a UMBC Public Affairs Scholar and former valedictorian at Mergenthaler HS (Baltimore), has been awarded the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship, awarded annually to 75 outstanding college juniors who are preparing for careers in government. Wilson is majoring in political science and plans to pursue joint degrees in public interest law and urban policy after completing her studies at UMBC. Read Full Article

UMBC and Achillion Pharmaceuticals Research Identifies New Class of Agents With Potential to Treat HIV/AIDS
Researchers from UMBC and Achillion Pharmaceuticals announced the discovery of a new target on the HIV molecule that could potentially lead to a new class of drugs to fight the virus that causes AIDS. The study, headed by Michael Summers, UMBC professor of chemistry/biochemistry and Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator, is featured on the cover of this week's Journal of Molecular Biology. The issue of academic integrity has been around perhaps as long as the schoolhouse, but is somewhat difficult to define - cheating to one person may be group work to another. An academic integrity steering committee and three subcommittees were formed in November 2001 and charged with finding ways to enhance academic honor and foster a culture of academic integrity at UMBC.
