Social & Behavioral Minimal Risk Research Module

Core Module Topics

This module is designed for faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students involved in minimal risk research, who plan to submit for expedited review and who have not previously completed the UMBC IRB training program.

Undergraduate students planning independent studies or honors theses involving minimal risk research or plan to become a member of a research team or lab will be required to complete the core modules of the Social & Behavioral training prior to initiating research. Similarly, graduate students who plan to become a member of a research team or lab or contemplating master’s thesis or dissertation research involving minimal risk research are required to complete the core modules of the Social & Behavioral training.

Current UMBC investigators whose IRB training certification has expired must complete the Social and Behavioral Research Refresher Module prior to initiating a human research project. Investigators will have received a notice from HARPO regarding re-certification.

Examples of minimal risk research include expedited or full board reviewed projects where disclosure of the participant’s identity might result in negative legal, financial, economic or social consequences, involve interviews or surveys on sensitive topics where the subject can be identified, studies involving focus groups or surveys or interview research with children. Click on the Examples of Research link for more information.

Optional Module Topics

Optional modules are provided for general interest and suggested reading only. Completing these modules do not show up on any completion reports and participants do not receive "extra credit" for completing them. They will be credited in the CITI grade book if a participant subsequently enrolls in a course that includes them.

However, investigators contemplating research with certain populations (i.e. minors) or type of research (i.e. Internet) must also complete the applicable modules before submitting any related IRB protocol applications. A print out of the “Optional Modules” completion report, found under University of Maryland, Baltimore County Learner Utilities in the investigator’s CITI page, must be accompany the application.
