Requirements for Graduate Program

• Bachelor's degree: Earned from a regionally accredited college or university or an equivalent degree from a comparative foreign institution
• No specific undergraduate degree is required
• GREs or the GMAT are not required for Domestic Applicants

Additional Program Admissions Requirements For Specific Applicants

The following additional program admissions requirements (beyond those required by the graduate school) apply to all students that do not have English as their native language or do not hold a bachelors degree or higher from a regionally accredited United States college or university:

• TOEFL score in excess of 550 on a paper-based test, 213 on a computer-based test or 80 on an internet-based test.
• GRE verbal test score in excess of 450.

• GRE quantitative test score in excess of 580.

^ New Portfolio Requirement
Beginning with the Fall 2012 semester, students admitted to the Master’s degree in Instructional Systems Development – Training Systems, will be required to complete a professional portfolio. This requirement will replace the current comprehensive exam requirement.

The purpose of this new requirement is to provide students an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned in their coursework and the program. It also provides students, employers, clients, colleagues, etc. with tangible evidence of our graduates’ knowledge, skill, abilities and competencies. Portfolios can be a wonderful career tool that may assist graduates in getting jobs, promotions, new clients, and other professional opportunities.

Students have the opportunity in nearly every class to create basic artifacts. With some polishing and improvements, these artifacts may be used to satisfy the portfolio requirement.

Complete application packets (e.g. all application forms, transcripts, supporting materials, fees, etc.) must be received by the dates listed for students to be considered for admission.

Students who miss the Master’s application deadline may still take courses as a Certificate or non-degree student and apply for formal admission the following semester. Students who miss the Certificate application deadline may still take courses as a non-degree student and apply for formal admission the following semester. Please Note: If you are applying for Financial Aid, to qualify, you MUST apply and be admitted as a Certificate or Master's candidate. If you miss the deadline for either program, you must wait until the next deadline to apply.

International Admissions

International Applicants are admitted only for Fall Semesters. All application documents must be submitted by the January 1st deadline to be considered. This includes TOEFL scores, transcripts and GRE scores. For International Applicants, GREs are required; unless your undergraduate degree was completed at a regionally accredited US Institution. Our program is offered online. U.S. Department of Education regulations require students with F-1 visas take a minimum number of in-person courses every semester. The ISD graduate program does not offer enough in-person courses to comply with that regulation. As a result, no I-20's for F-1 visas will be issued by UMBC for this program. However, international students have the option of taking the program online in their home country, since they would not have to obtain a visa.
