Continuous learning is the key to success!

Living in a time when knowledge and information is constantly changing, continuous learning seems to be the key to success. Jeffrey Boham, an M.A. student in UMBC’s ISD graduate program believes education offers an opportunity to build essential skills and network with a cadre of “knowledge experts” and seasoned professionals who will play a vital role in the future workforce.

With a bachelor’s degree from his native country, Ghana, and a master’s degree in Human Resource Development from Georgia State University, Boham thrives on absorbing as much knowledge as possible. In addition to being a student in the ISD master’s program, he’s concurrently working toward earning all three graduate certificates in Instructional Systems Development, Instructional Technology and Distance Education.

The determination to pursue lifelong learning in his chosen profession and to stay in contact with like-minded professionals is what motivated him to enroll in the program at UMBC. He explained that it is the most practical, applied program of all the programs he considered.

“In one way or another, the skills I’ve acquired in this program have been applicable to my current job. In particular, the process of thoroughly and systematically analyzing problems before proceeding with any design decisions has been extremely helpful,” he said.

In addition to the practical knowledge gained, the program’s networking opportunities have impacted his career significantly. He landed his present job as an Instructional Systems Designer at Aerotek by the referral of a colleague whom he met in the program. Furthermore, he has received several leads and opportunities to meet seasoned professionals through classmates, UMBC’s Training Forum, and through regular emails sent from UMBC’s career services staff.

Moving forward, Boham would like to engage others in the power of lifelong learning so they, too, can enjoy professional success. He plans to contribute towards capacity building efforts in African countries, especially his homeland of Ghana, by organizing workshops in strategic planning and developmental training programs and e-learning clinics.
