The Laboratory for Advanced Materials and Processes (LAMP) is a place for exploration and  learning.  We perform investigations on the properties of hard biological tissues, the engineered materials that replace them, and the interfaces between them. Our studies are often aimed at understanding the fatigue and fracture behavior of these materials and systems, as well as finding ways to define and characterize failures.  We use a large number of experimental and numerical approaches in our investigations.  Some of our most recent efforts have been in the fields of orthopedics and restorative dentistry.

Based on the nature of problems that are of interest, we collaborate with a large group of investigators, including individuals from federal laboratories, at other institutions in the United States and abroad, as well as with scientists within selected industries.   The laboratory is well equipped to investigate fundamental issues, and to solve research and development problems of industrial relevance.
