In Their Own Words

Ellen LineEllen Line

I have been able to witness and participate in quality, thought provoking, emotional, cathartic art and discussions about art that I wouldn't have otherwise experienced. Although mostly involved in theatre, I love all kinds of art.  Experiencing a wide variety or artistic media and venues through the VPA 120 and 121 classes has been wonderfully exciting and mind-expanding.

I feel really fortunate to have received this scholarship. Already it has provided opportunities to see different art forms both on and off campus. I especially enjoyed being part of a program that went to an elementary school in Baltimore to provide kids with an after-school photography project.

What I have enjoyed most about the Linehan Program is the respect I receive from UMBC faculty and other students. Being an artist, I have grown accustomed to other people being skeptical of my abilities; I've notice being a "Linehan" comes with a certain amount of prestige.

Being a Linehan has opened my eyes to art I never appreciated before. I now love looking at an abstract piece of art and discovering its meaning . Interpreting the meaning of a play, or identifying the story behind a dance allows me to use parts of my imagination that I never knew existed.

The Linehan is the scholarship for the holistic artist. It allows the artist to focus on his/her chosen concentration while exploring other art forms.

Before college I had never seen an opera, listened to modern classical music, or gone to a dance performance. Expanding and diversifying my horizons is extremely important and I am able to do so because of the opportunities the Linehan program offers me.

Within the Linehan Scholar community we are taught to take our passion in the visual arts and expand them in every way possible. We are exposed to artists--local and national, amateurs and well-known--and pushed to explore areas out of our conceptions of what "art" is and what it can be.

The Linehan Program allows students to work together in and out of their chosen fields. It truly allows each student to grow and expand their knowledge and practice of all arts.

I think that being in the Linehan Program has exposed me to new forms of art and new ways to express myself. The program explores all areas of the ats and explains them in a clear and hands-on way.

The Linehan Program has s provided me with opportunities to expereience exquisite art and opened my eyes to the wide vairety of artistic expression that exist. Never having seen an opera in my life, having the chance to see "La Boheme" in New York City was awe-inspiring.

The New York trip to see "La Boheme" and visit the Whitney Museum was the most eye-opening and memorable event for me. Another was attending the performance of "Wild Black-eyed Susans" on campus. Before becoming a Linehan, I was little aware of the other art forms existing in this world; I was keen for music, especially classical music, and just didn't notice dance, opera, visual art, or theatre.
