Mrs.
Davis is a career educator with over 25 years of experience in
classroom instruction and education program administration.
She has taught students from pre-kindergarten through college, and
credits her enjoyment in life long learning as the motivation for
choosing education as her profession and her avocation. She holds
a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish Education, a Master’s
degree in Urban Education, and has completed additional graduate
study in the Diagnosis, Assessment, and Teaching of Reading, and
Teaching the Adult Learner. She is currently enrolled in an art course,
The Studio Experience, “I’m challenging my right brain
and fueling my interest in aesthetics,” she says.
As
the LRC Director, Mrs. Davis conducts and oversees all administrative
activities
and guides the instructional program efforts of the LRC
staff. She assures that the University and students receive a comprehensive,
educationally sound, and UMBC relevant academic support program.
Administrative and supervisory decision-making about fiscal and other
resources, staff performance and professional development, program
evaluation, and program planning require most of Mrs. Davis’ attention.
Collaborating with others about students’ progression through
the undergraduate program and serving on campus committees are important
tasks as well. Committee work for New Student Orientation, the Provost’s
Task Force on Student Life, and Co-chairing the committee for The
First Year Student Success Course affect policy and/or practice regarding
UMBC students. Consequently these discussions may also impact current
and potential LRC program offerings. Mrs. Davis routinely attends
the Presidents Retreat, the Provost’s Forum on Academic Integrity,
and presents at the New Faculty Orientation.
Mrs.
Davis enjoys working with students directly. She conducts training
workshops
for all new tutors and experienced tutors who
opt to complete the training for the “Advanced” and “Master” tutor
certifications. The LRC tutor training program has received full
certification from the College Reading and Learning Association.
She also does study skills presentations for student groups, peer
leaders, and students in first-year success courses.
