The Freshman Year Intervention (FYI) Program is part of a campus-wide retention program designed to help new freshmen whose performance by mid-semester indicates that they need some additional academic support, if they are to succeed in their collegiate goals.
The FYI Program is coordinated by the Learning Resources Center (LRC). This program does the following:
  • Identifies new freshmen who at mid-semester are in academic difficulty. That is, they are in danger of receiving one or more grades below a C.
  • Notifies these freshmen of their poor performance by mail. Their letter lists the campus support services available to them and recommends that they take advantage of these services.
  • Notifies selected student support programs, such as Academic Advisement, Student Support Services, and Residential Life, that these new freshmen need their assistance.
Freshmen, who received an FYI Letter, say that because of the letter they:
  • realized that they had to change their study habits if they wanted to pass the class.
  • asked for help from their professor, TA, and other students in their class.
  • attended tutoring sessions.
