Course Repeat Policy and Petition Process
Students may not register for a course more than two times. Students are considered registered for a course if she/he is enrolled after the end of the schedule adjustment period. Students may petition the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE) for a third and final attempt of a course taken at UMBC or another institution. An attempt is defined as enrollment in a course or its equivalent at another institution, in which the student has received a grade or an official withdraw was given. This includes credit by exam or if a student withdraws from the entire semester/session. Students should consult with their academic departments for additional restrictions or policies regarding repeated courses.
The complete checklist can be found on their website and includes two items run by the LRC.
Students taking a course for the third time are required to have a tutor. During the Fall and Spring semesters, if the course is of the 100 or 200-level, or is on our courses tutored list, then you can get a tutor through the LRC. Please bring the Tutor Contract (attached to the checklist) up to our main office at ACIV B-wing Room 345 and we will fill the bottom part out. You must also email Sam Riley verifying that you completed this part of the petition. If you are retaking the class in the Winter or Summer, or we do not offer tutoring, then you can look to your friends who have passed, ask the professor or the department for a tutor, use a professional tutoring service, or email us and we can try and find you a private tutor.
Students that are repeating a class that has a Math Pre-requisite will need to take a Math Diagnostic Test. This includes all 100 – 200 level Math courses, 100 – 300 level Statistics courses, 100 level Physics courses, Chem 301, and CMSC 203. Exceptions to the Math Pre-requisite policy are 300 level Math courses and any other CMSC course other than 203, students repeating those courses do not have to fulfill the Math Diagnostic part of the petition. These tests are to discover if you have any weaknesses in your math background so they can be filled before attempting a class for the last time. To schedule a Math Diagnostic, please fill out the form below. This testing should be done at least a month before the semester starts so you have the time needed to relearn any lost material.
