Placement Testing Exemptions

Transfer Students who are exempted are still highly recommended to take the appropriate placement tests to verify their readiness for their next UMBC Course.

ENGLISH PLACEMENT TEST
  • A score of 4 or 5 on the AP English Language and Composition test or the AP English Literature and Composition Test.*

    OR

  • Completion of a transfer course equivalent to English 100 (English Composition) with a grade of "C" or better.
READING PLACEMENT TEST
  • A score of 3, 4, or 5 on one of the following AP exams.*
    • Government and Politics - American
    • Government and Politics - Comparative
    • History - European
    • History - World
    • History - United States
    • Human Geography
    • Psychology

OR

  • A score of 4 or 5 on one of the following AP Social Science exams.*
    • Economics - Macro
    • Economics - Micro

OR

  • Completion of a transfer course in social science with a grade of "C" or better.

MATH PLACEMENT TEST
  • A score of 3, 4 or 5 on the Calculus AB or BC Exam.*

    OR

  • Completion of a transfer course in college-level math with a grade of "C" or better

* In order to be exempted from placement testing, official AP or IB score reports must be received by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions prior to the student's orientation date.

Students with IB or CLEP scores awarded UMBC credit may also be exempted from testing. For more information about IB and CLEP equivalencies, please refer to pages two and three in the Appendix of the Undergraduate Catalog

If you are transferring in courses from a Maryland Community College, you can use ARTSYS to help determine the corresponding UMBC course.
