Welcome to Supplemental Instruction (SI) at UMBC!

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support model that utilizes peer assisted study sessions. The SI program targets traditionally difficult academic courses and provides regularly scheduled, out-of-class review sessions. The SI study sessions are informal seminars in which students compare notes, discuss readings and develop organizational tools and predict test items. This form of academic assistance is attached directly to selected courses at the undergraduate, graduate and professional school levels. This program was developed at UMKC in 1973 and is used in hundreds of colleges and universities around the world.

Supplemental Instruction (SI) at UMBC began in 2009. The SI sessions are free of charge to students and attendance is voluntary. Many students who attend one SI session return for other sessions during the semester. Studies show that many students who attend SI sessions improve their grades. Times for SI sessions are determined by a survey of students during the first day of class. Additional review sessions are held before tests and examinations. For current SI schedule click here.
