The Department of Marine Biotechnology (DMB) was formed in July 2010 following a realignment within the University System of Maryland (USM). Many news reports in this section about research by DMB faculty members refer to the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI) and the Center of Marine Biotechnology (COMB). UMBI was dissolved at the time of the realignment, and COMB was renamed the Institute for Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET).
