Located in room 006 of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry building on the UMBC campus, the Mass Spectrometry Facility is an instrument laboratory providing a variety of mass spectrometry services to the University and the research community at-large on a fee basis. The facility serves as a resource offering service, training and instrumentation with the primary aim of providing investigators with access to contemporary mass spectrometry instrumentation and expertise.

Facility capabilities

The facility is equipped with five mass spectrometers listed below:

JEOL HX110/HX100 four sector tandem mass spectrometer
This instrument is used to achieve extremely high level of mass accuracy required to confirm the elemental composition of the products of chemical syntheses.

Bruker AUTOFLEX MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer
UMBC and outside researches use this instrument to rapidly analyse various macromolecules in the range of 500 to 200,000 Da. Negligible sample consuption (<1 pmole), high accuracy (10-100 ppm) and analysis speed make this instrument a valuble asset in life science research.

Bruker ESQUIRE 3000 LC-MS system
The heart of this system is a quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer. Its high sensitivity and tandem mass spectrometry (MSn) capability make it indenspensible tool for a variety of biological macromolecule and small molecule applications. This versatile instrument can be configured to identify and characterize various analytes using one or a combination of methods listed below:

Shimadzu GC-17A/QP-5000 GC-MS
This instrument is used for the analysis of GC-amendable compounds.

As one of the most powerful analytical tools of today, mass spectrometry has a variety of applications and it is impossible to list every possible utilization of the facility instruments, services and expertise.
