Local FAQ's
What is the deadline for making contributions?
All pledge cards and checks should be sent to the department coordinators by November 15. We have asked department coordinators to review them and transfer them to Norah Freeston in The Office of Institiutional Advancement by November 19. If you are unable to reach your department coordinator, you may send them directly to Norah Freeston no later than November 19, 2004.
What is the organization of the UMBC campaign?
Terry Aylsworth, Bob Carpenter and Joe Hill are co-chairing the campaign this year. The Office of Institutional Advancement is handling the collection of donations for the campus. We have asked each administrative unit on campus to find a volunteer to coordinate the giving of that unit. Some smaller units share a single coordinator. This coordinator makes sure that each person in the unit has information about the campaign and is asked to participate. The coordinator also answers or relays questions, collects donations and pledge cards, reviews and checks materials, and sends donations to The Office of INstitutional Advancement.
Should I give to UMBC through MCC?
It is better to give directly tto UMBC through the UMBC Faculty/Staff campaign. You have the same options for payroll deduction in the UMBC Faculty/Staff campaign but without our having to send the funds to MCC only to have MCC send the funds back to the campus after taking out its overhead assessment. Also, through MCC you cannot designate your gift to UMBC departments or programs. Through the UMBC Faculty/Staff campaign you can designate your gift to very specific purposes, if you choose. However, if you prefer to give to UMBC through MCC, you have that option.
Will the amount of my pledge or donation be kept confidential?
Yes. If you do not want the department coordinator to know, send it directly to Norah Freeston. Donors of $500 or more are asked to fill out a form with information to be used in giving them membership in the MCC 2004 Leadership Society, but if you so indicate on the form you will be listed as anonymous.

What are the Leadership Society categories?
$2,000 and above = Platinum
$1,500 - $1,999 = Gold
$1,000 - $1,499 = Silver
$500 - $999 = Bronze
1% or more of salary = Living by Giving
How can I get other questions about the campaign answered?
First, ask your department coordinator who may be able to answer your question immediately. If the answer requires some research, the coordinator can relay the question to others and get back to you.

How does income tax withholding work for payroll deductions?
There is no tax advantage to payroll deductions as opposed to donations by check. The income tax withholding from your pay check is calculated prior to the deduction of the donation from your pay and is not changed by that deduction. However, when you submit your tax forms after the end of the year, you can claim your charitable donations as deductions and reap the tax benefit from them at that time.
