Description of Research

Secondary injuries like ischemia, apoptosis, inflammation, and necrosis result from traumatic spinal cord injury.  Hypothermia is used to treat such injuries and prevent permanent neurological damage; however, current cooling methods are invasive and can lead to further cord damage.  Placing a cooling pad along the back is less invasive and may still lead to positive results.  For my research, I use mathematical modeling to determine the feasibility of the proposed method and perform animal experiments to validate these theoretical models.
