Area of Doctoral Research:
Pediatric cancer patients undergo numerous painful medical procedures
as part of chemotherapy. Many factors affect how distressed children
are during these procedures such as: temperament, health, vein accessibility,
parent distress and behavior, and nurse behavior. Of increasing
interest to researchers is how parent behavior during the medical
procedure affects child distress. Researchers have examined the
effects of different activities and distractors on reducing child
distress, but few have involved the parents in the intervention.
This study will examine the changes in parent behaviors associated
with a distraction intervention, and how these behavioral changes
are related to child distress. More specifically, this study will
focus on changes in parent criticism, apologies, praise, distraction
use, self-reported anxiety, and self-efficacy reports.
